ज़िन्दगी का पेड़
एक छोटे से घरौन्दे पर गिर पड़ा ।

मैंने सोचा —
कितना बड़ा है वह !
लेकिन ऐसा नहीं है ।

कहीं दूर मुझे अब भी पहाड़ियाँ दिखती हैं ।
सामने दूर तक पानी का बहाव देखना बेमिसाल है ।
मेरी नाव शानदार है और मैं कप्तान हूँ उसकी;
पाल फहराना जो मैंने सीखा नहीं।

लेकिन मैं भटकती हूँ
ज़िन्दगी के पेड़ के बिना,
जो गिर पड़ी है
बिना किसी सलीके या रहम के
इस छोटे से घर पर ।

हटे तानाशाह की ख़ातिर
हमेशा के लिए ।

The tree of life
has fallen on my small house.
I thought it was so much bigger!
But it is not.
There in the distance I see the mountains
still.
The view of vast water stretching before me
is superb.
My boat is grand and I still command the captain
of it; not having learned myself to sail.
But I am adrift
without my tree of life
that has fallen heavy
without grace or pity
on this small place.
