 MEMORY OF PARADISE

On my way to school lay paradise
Behind high walls, guava trees and henna shrubs

Just beyond the entrance one could see
Name plates of sages and saints in floral script
Divinities going in and out in cars
Once a year the Club would host the carnival of fairies and goddesses
Celestial nymphs would dance before the huge idol of Durga

With my father I saw some of the deities at close
They were really old, would read each other Song of the Dark Bumblebee*
They laughed and appeared quite contented
They were victors of many a battles for justice

I distinctly remember the face of a deity
Who would make dead children get up with the flick of a finger
He was a Bengali
His cigarette never went out.
