Kavita Kosh

Prabhat’s Hindi poem ‘Alvida’:
Three Translations
1.
GOODBYE
we will wipe away tears from each other’s eyes
if we come out alive
we will be shade and shelter for one another
if we come out alive
we will pour like rain on our parched lands
we will send gifts of dreams
if we come out alive

but the planet is cramped right now with bodies to cremate
right now our hands are busy lighting pyres
and digging graves so that those we loved will rest in peace
right now we have but just one word: goodbye

those of us who come out alive will watch this word
crash on its own shadow in complete exhaustion

(Translation I by Bhupinder Brar)

2.
FAREWELL
If we remain alive then we will wipe each other's tears
If we remain alive then we will be shade for each other
If we remain alive then we will rain in each other's drought.
If we remain alive then we will send gifts of dreams to each other.

Right now the earth is surrounded by funeral pyres
Right now the hands are busy lighting the fire
Right now the hands are digging the graves
To peacefully put to sleep our dear ones
Right now only word left on this earth is

Farewell

Whoever will remain alive
Will see this word get dead tired
And drop into its own shadow.

3.
GOODBYE
if we come out alive
we will wipe tears
from each other’s eyes
we will shelter one another
in our shade
we will pour like rain
on our parched souls
we will send gifts of dreams
to one another
if we come out alive

but the planet is cramped right now
with bodies to cremate
right now our hands are busy
lighting pyres and digging graves
so that those we loved will rest in peace
right now we have but just one word:

goodbye

those of us who come out alive
will hopefully watch this word
crumble on its own shadow
in complete exhaustion

(Translation II by Bhupinder Brar)
