उन्होंने उससे पूछा —
तुम क्यों गाते हो?
उसने जवाब दिया —
मैं गाने के लिए गाता हूँ।
उन्होंने उसकी छाती टटोली
पर वहाँ उसका दिल नहीं ढूँढ़ पाए
उन्होंने उसका दिल टटोला
पर उन्हें वहाँ नहीं मिले उसके लोग
उन्होंने उसकी आवाज़ की तलाशी ली
पर उन्हें वहाँ उसका दुख नहीं मिला
उसके बाद उन्होंने उसके दुख की तलाशी ली
और वहाँ उन्हें मिला उसका क़ैदख़ाना
उन्होंने तलाशी ले डाली कैदख़ाने की
लेकिन उन्हें दिखे वे सब सिर्फ़ बेड़ी-हथकड़ी में।
