मुझे अँग्रेज़ी काम भर नहीं आती
मैं अँग्रेज़ी में चिट्ठी नहीं लिख सकता
हिन्दी के बारे में अनगिनत बातें मुझे नहीं मालूम
लेकिन ठाठ से उसमें कविता लिखता हूँ
मैथिली जैसी-तैसी है लिख तो बिल्कुल नहीं पाऊँगा
उर्दू का हाल ये है कि शब्दार्थ न दिए हों
तो एक शेर भी न समझ पाऊँ
पंजाबी हो या पोलिश
कविता के अनुवाद का मैं इतना भूखा हूँ कि पूछो मत
हिन्दी, अँग्रेज़ी, मैथिली, उर्दू के मामले में
ऐसा ही कुछ हाल मेरे बच्चों का भी है
बेटी रूसी बोल लेती है, परीक्षा पास करने लायक जर्मन भी
बेटा जर्मन सीख रहा है फ्रेंच सीखेगा
कहता है अँग्रेज़ी में मेरी कविता उसे ज़्यादा समझ में आती है
इतनी भाषाएँ काफ़ी हैं हम तीन लोगों के लिए
इनके अलावा हमारे पास रोना-गाना
और चूमना-चाटना भी तो है

LANGUAGE
I barely know English
Can’t write a letter in it
I don’t know a thousand things about Hindi
But write poems in it with élan
I can manage in Maithili but will not be able to write in it
As for Urdu, unless there is a glossary
I will not understand a single couplet
I have great hunger to read poetry in translation
Be it Punjabi or Polish
When it comes to Hindi, English, Maithili and Urdu
My children are the same
My daughter can speak Russian knows enough German to pass an exam
My son is learning German will go on to learn French
He says he understands my poems better in English translation
These many languages are enough for three of us
And then we have our joys and sorrows
And hugging and kissing.
