सदर बाज़ार में / असद ज़ैदी
जब मैंने एक मुसलमान को, जो पल्लेदार था,
कई लोगों के बीच यह कहते हुए सुना —
नहीं, भाई साहब, हम मुसलमान परेशान बिल्कुल नहीं हैं,
हमें आदत पड़ गई है
परेशान तो हिन्दू भाई हैं,
हम अगर परेशान हैं तो उनकी परेशानी से परेशान हैं,
तो मैंने देखी उसकी गरिमा उसका विवेक।
उसे मालूम था हालात कहाँ तक जा चुके हैं।
उस आढ़तिये के मुनीम से जब वह कह रहा था —
हम तुम्हारे पल्लेदार, हम भी तो इनसान हैं,
तो दरअसल वह याद दिला रहा था, भाई जी
तुम भी तो इन्सान हो !

In Sadar Bazaar
When I heard a Musalmaan, who was a loader
Saying to a cluster of people –
No, brother, we Musalmaans are not troubled at all,
We're used to it
It's our Hindu brothers who are troubled,
If we're troubled, it's only on account of their being troubled,
Then I saw his dignity, his wisdom.
He knew how far things have gone.
When he was saying to the accountant of the commission agent –
We, your loaders, are human too,
He was actually reminding him, my brother
You are human too!
